Hey Alaska! Todd Bagetis here. 👋❄️

As a guy who spent 22 years in the Coast Guard chasing bad guys and now spends my retirement chasing Snowflake and Blizzard (my reindeer) through the snow, I’ve learned one thing: Alaskan livestock are just like Alaskans—tough, stubborn, and they probably shouldn’t be out in this weather, yet here we are. 🦌🏔️

By default, I'm now currently serving as the Chair for the Alaska Farm Bureau Livestock Committee, and I’m looking for more livestock owners to join the crew and "yes" someone to take my spot next November who's a hard charger. 🐄🐖🧤

Why join us? Because farming in Alaska in 2026 is basically a high-stakes survival reality show, and we shouldn’t have to do it alone. We’re working on some major "non-dairy" issues this year:
• Veterinary Care: We’re pushing for new and revised regulations to get more large animal vets into the state. If I have to Google "how to perform an emergency reindeer procedure with a multi-tool" one more time, I’m retiring again. 🩺🩹
More farmer friendly policies when it comes our State and Federal Vet policies is a big one for many too.
• Common-Sense Rules: We want regulations that actually work for Alaska, not for some guy in a suit in DC who thinks "livestock" only means cows on a flat green pasture. 🚫💼
• Youth Support: Making sure our FFA and 4-H kids have the resources they need to be the next generation of "outstanding" farmers.
• Feed & Land: Fighting for keep feed prices down and making us all want to eat the hay ourselves. 🌾📉
• Selling: poultry, beef, pork and "yes", even reindeer: Policies and Federal exemptions to support the sale of livestock on your farm, to grocery stores and other retail and wholesale outlets & establishments within Alaska.

The Membership Pitch:
Look, if your 2026 resolution was to have fewer "udder" disasters or to stop "sheepishly" accepting bad policies, this is your sign. Whether you’ve got two goats and 6 chickens in a shed or a whole herd of beef cattle in Delta Junction, we need your voice. 📣🐃. We need a diversified voice from all variations of livestock owners which absolutely includes our States very large hobby farmer population (95% of our AG community).

I promise our meetings are 100% "no bull"—unless you’re actually bringing one. Let’s stop talking to our fences and start talking to the people in Juneau and DC as a collective organized team who can actually make a difference. 🏛️🚜
Ready to join the movement? Drop a comment or click the link below to become a member of the Alaska Farm Bureau Livestock Committee and help us steer the future of Alaskan livestock! 🧀💨

On these cold days, here's something to think about for your Spring projects. This herb trough could be a very nice enrichment opportunity for your critters. Our hardware cloth, or rolled gap fencing could be used to make this. For a larger area, you could use one of our raised garden beds and a gap panel over the top. I've seen chicken grazing pads done in a similar way with 4x4 posts on the ground with a gap panel or hardware cloth over the top.
Happy planning folks. Let us know if you have something like this already.

Many of you will remember the horse herb enrichment trough we created in the summer. It’s now JANUARY(!!) and it’s still going strong 💪🏼 Jay here has taken a shine to the chickweed although you can see he takes time to give it all a good sniff and make his choices. I’m shocked it’s still growing although I shouldn’t be as it’s been so mild - I suspect it will slow down a lot now! 🥶 Lots of plants on offer for the time being
